Pontiac may have created the muscle car, but they stole - borrowed - the name from Ferrari. The Ferrari 250 GTO, produced from 1962 to 1964, took its name from the Italian "Gran Turismo Omologata," which means "Grand Touring Homologated." To be homologated (sanctioned) for racing, a car company has to produce a certain number of cars to ensure they are not specially built prototypes.
