The Mercury Cyclone was introduced in 1964 based on the Comet line. The 390 cid big block rated at 335 horsepower became an option in 1966. In 1968, the 335 horsepower 428 Cobra Jet, and the 390 horsepower 427 were made available. In 1969, the Cyclone Spoiler II was designed to compete in NASCAR and was Mercury's version of Ford's Torino Talladega. It had an extended aerodynamic nose and flush grill among other modifications. Also in 1969, the Cyclone CJ model was introduced which came equiped with the 428 Cobra Jet engine and a special handling package. Redesigned as a larger car for the 1970 model year, the Cyclone would be produced until 1972. In 1970, the 429 Super Cobra Jet (rated at 375 horsepower) and the Boss 429 were optional.
