Named after the Warner Brothers cartoon character, the Plymouth Road Runner was a low cost (originally under $3,000) bare-bones muscle car. Introduced in 1968, the standard engine was a 383 with 335 horsepower and 425 ft-lbs of torque. The 425 hp 426 Hemi with 490 ft-lbs of torque was an option. In 1969, the 440 Six Pack engine was made available, rated at 390 hp and 490 ft-lbs of torque. In terms of driveability for the street, the 440 6-pack was probably a better choice than the Hemi which cost twice as much. In 1971 the Road Runner was redesigned with a new "fuselage" body style that lasted until 1974. 1971 was also the last year for the 426 Hemi. All Road Runners had a distinctive "beep-beep" horn, simulating the sound of the roadrunner cartoon character.
