The 4-4-2 name was an acronym for 4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed transmission, and dual exhaust. It was Oldsmobile's answer to the successful ‘64 Pontiac GTO. At first an option package on the Cutlass and F-85 models, the 442 was a separate model from 1968 to 1971 during the height of the muscle car era. The ‘64 442 had a 330 CID engine rated at 310 hp. In 1968, the 442 Hurst/Olds came equipped with a 455 rated at 390 horsepower and 500 lbs-ft of torque.
