The legendary Hemi is probably the most famous engine of all time. Named after the hemispherical shape of the combustion chamber, the 426 Hemi was originally designed to win at NASCAR and it was hugely successful. Although Chrysler had made an earlier 331 cubic inch Hemi in the 1950's, it's the 1960's 426 Hemi which became renowned. Hemi-powered cars won countless races and set many speed records throughout the sixties.Compared to the race Hemi, the street version had a milder cam, different intake and exhaust manifolds, and a lower compression ratio (10.25:1 vs 12.5:1). Only 11,000 street Hemis were manufactured between 1966 and 1971, when production ended. As an option, the Hemi cost over a thousand dollars in 1966, and it probably cost Chrysler even more to build them. With two four-barrel carbs, the 426 street Hemi was rated at 425 horsepower and 490 ft-lbs of torque. The 426 Hemi was optional on the Charger, Satellite, GTX, Cuda, Superbird, Daytona, Super Bee, Road Runner, Challenger, Cornet, Belvedere, and Dart.Note that most shirts that have a small design on the front, also have a full-sized image on the back.
